Description
A reluctant sale of a true British motoring icon. Great history with these models, which formed the core of Bentley & Rolls Royce production from April 1955 until March 1966, this S2 Bentley has many mechanical refinements of the S3 coupled with, I think, the far finer S1 front end. The J.P. Blatchley design was a major change from the pre-war models. As part of a range rationalisation, the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud is near identical apart from, of course, its radiator grille. The chassis was a simple steel box section, welded together and very rigid. Construction retained the traditional split between chassis and body which facilitated the provision of special bodied versions, although in practice the overwhelming majority of cars were delivered with the standard steel body shell, produced by Pressed Steel, and employing lightweight aluminium-based alloy for the doors, bonnet, and boot. All S2's were fitted with the sublime 6.3ltr V8 Rolls Royce engine coupled with the ultra smooth four-speed GM Hydramatic transmission. And lastly thankfully proper power steering on this model unlike the S1, making manoeuvring much easier on these later S2 and S3 models. First registered on 11th October 1961, the handsome Bentley S2 offered here presents beautifully in its silver/grey two tone paintwork and Slate leather interior. The factory specification includes central front and rear armrests, Smiths gauges, a three-spoke Bakelite steering wheel, folding rear tables and manual windows. The extensive burr walnut inlays, rear tables and grey sheepskin over mats all present very well. An excellent example that has just been fully recommissioned with just one owner from 1961 - 2023. In very good condition and ready to join a new collection or equally ready for regular use. A new gearbox has been fitted by the RR/Bentley experts GW Whitehouse Autos of Birmingham at a cost of ten thousand pounds in June 2024. Brakes compressively overhauled November 2023 including a new brake servo unit ensuring solid stopping power. Carburettor rebuilt allowing swift smooth acceleration. New HT leads, distributor cap, spark plugs, rotor arm and points fitted plus engine fully serviced with just 200 miles since. New front bushes fitted. Outstanding chassis condition for the year, clearly has been dry stored all its life. The particularly smart private plate comes with the car and please note is non-transferable. The car is parked in our car storage barn so it is easy to view in all weathers. Part service history, Silver, 2 owners, £38,950
