Description
The performance aspect is where the Puma ST really shines. Powered by a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 200 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, the Puma ST offers a level of performance that’s rare for a subcompact crossover. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in around 6.7 seconds, which is quick enough to bring a smile to your face. The engine’s response is crisp, and it has a delightful engine note that adds to the experience, thanks to the Performance Pack’s sportier exhaust system.
The Performance Pack also includes a retuned suspension system with stiffer springs and dampers, improving the vehicle’s agility and handling. The Puma ST feels incredibly nimble for an SUV of its size, with sharp steering and minimal body roll. It’s genuinely fun to drive, and the addition of a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD) ensures that it grips the road well during spirited driving. This is a feature typically found in more expensive performance cars, and it allows the Puma ST to feel far more dynamic than other small crossovers.
In terms of driving modes, the Puma ST comes with Normal, Eco, and Sport settings, and with the Performance Pack, you can access a more aggressive mode that tunes the car’s throttle response, steering, and suspension for maximum enjoyment. The driving experience is further enhanced by the Puma ST’s manual transmission option, which gives the driver more control over gear shifts, although a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is also available.
While the performance focus is clear, Ford hasn’t compromised entirely on comfort. The suspension, although stiffened for better handling, is still able to absorb most of the imperfections in the road, making for a relatively smooth ride in daily driving. On rougher surfaces, you may feel more road feedback, but the car doesn’t become uncomfortably harsh. The Puma ST offers a good balance between ride comfort and handling precision, making it a pleasant vehicle to drive both in the city and on longer trips.
