It's very frugal indeed - we've actually seen the combined MPG creep over 70mpg if driven carefully, but it's also strong and quite punchy. Having owned both the 1.2 petrol and the 1.3 diesel versions both are great and there are arguments for each but if you're looking for fantastic MPG combined with the characteristic, somewhat sporty low-end growl of the diesel I'd go for the diesel.
