Description
The car runs and drives and is stored in my garage year round, it is Tax exempt and passed an MOT last time it was done.
This Lightweight is a work in progress that I have owned for over 20 years. It was owned by Bill Drummond of the 'The KLF' (The Kopyright Liberation Front) and used at the Newbury bypass protests where it was fitted with a 2000W sound system (wiring + melted balloons still present)
I bought it with the V8 conversion already done, it is a 3.5 litre Rover engine from an SD1 so higher compression than Land Rover engines. I fitted an uprated 'Crower' camshaft, 'Rhoads' lifters, 'Edelbrock' 4 barrel carburettor (new air filter included in sale) and an 'RPI' A&R Power Amp to the engine. It was outputting 250 bhp on the rolling road at that time.
I converted the Diffs to Range Rover so it can reach over 100Mph easily. It has 'Warn' free wheeling hubs on the front for RWD without spinning the front prop shaft. It also had new shocks about ten years ago, but runs on the standard leaf springs.
In 2019 I changed the fuel tank, the fuel lines, the alternator and the radiator with new parts. I have new parts for the car (included,) such as new replacement glass, door handles with keys, transmission tunnel cover, ducting for the heated windscreen etc.
I managed to source a 'new old stock' bulk head top for a Series 2 and then had a local specialist adapt the windscreen mounts to Series 3, this is fitted and has only surface rust as not painted yet. I searched for this for years and paid a lot for it as they are very rare and the first thing to go on Lightweight Land Rovers.
If you are looking to do an original Lightweight restoration this is probably the wrong car for you... I didn't want an 83 bhp 2.25L four cylinder with gearing for 50Mph max, hence the 250 bhp 3.5L V8 with gearing for modern roads due to the Range Rover Diffs (no overdrive needed)
The paint was originally green, then black then grey but the V5 says black, it is rough but I quite like the 'Rat Rod' look so held off on respray, the body work however is very straight and better than my 2014 Defender.
Chassis was painted at some point so it is hard to tell where the rust is, but it looks pretty good all round. The outriggers have got corrosion and probably need patching before MOT.
Carburettor needs cleaning + setting up as it runs too rich and 'pinks' so the timing needs setting up.
Brakes and clutch are good and had work + new parts done by specialist.
Bikini top only.
