Description

When two-time WRC champion and latter-day consultant to Porsche, Walter Rhrl, declared in the early '90s that the 968 Club Sport was the best-handling car that Porsche made, you know you must take this car seriously. From the humble beginnings of the 924 back in 1975 to what we have here, in the form of this stunning 1994 968 Club Sport, we lay witness to the transformation of a car into something that is very special indeed. Shooting Brake couldn't be more excited to have this car on our platform. Porsche was facing tight financial constraints back in the early 90's, yet the 968 still had a few years left in its production run. To re-engage customers and demonstrate that Porsche could still deliver an exceptional driver's car, they developed the 968 Club Sport. By stripping down the standard 968, refining its chassis, and adding color-matched accents, Porsche transformed the average 968 into the spirited performer it was always meant to be. No central locking, no rear seats, thinner glass, fewer speakers, no electric boot release, wind-up windows, rear wiper delete - all of this adds up to about 50kgs of weight saving over the standard 968 that sees the car tip the scales at a very respectable 1320kgs overall. The 968 3-litre engine featured VarioCam, Porsche's new-at-the-time variable valve timing system which adjusted the inlet cam timing to give a better mix of low-down torque and power at higher revs. The much-lauded transaxle layout proffered a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution (49:51 by many people's reckoning) and although the CS ran 20mm lower than a standard 968, the biggest difference from the standard car came with the M030 option kit. This included new springs and dampers, and bigger discs and stiffer anti-roll bars. This particular 968 CS has a couple of tricks up its sleeve, too. A common complaint with the 968 platform was a shortage of power. Not in this example; a Raptor centrifugal supercharger obtained from US-based 928 Motorsports has been fitted, with the work carried out by 9Excellence here in the UK. This sees an increase of power to about 300bhp - a not insignificant rise over the base 968 Club Sport with its 240bhp. The upgrade has been done to a very high level of quality by experts and has been thoroughly tested for reliability. It has made the car what it always should have been. An aftermarket LSD has been fitted as well as a lightweight flywheel and Bilstein suspension. The 968 Club Sport will always be a high spot. Next MOT due 17/04/2025, Black, 5+ owners, £39,995
