Description
The 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc Design 1.0 TSI 115PS is a stylish and practical compact SUV that delivers solid performance from a small engine, combined with Volkswagen’s trademark build quality and everyday usability.
Don’t be fooled by the small 1.0-litre badge — this turbocharged three-cylinder engine packs a respectable 115PS and performs surprisingly well around town and on motorways. Acceleration is modest (0–62 mph in around 10.1 seconds), but the engine is smooth and punchy enough for most driving scenarios, especially with light passengers and cargo. It's also very economical, with real-world fuel consumption typically averaging between 45–50 mpg, making it an ideal choice for budget-conscious drivers.
The T-Roc handles more like a hatchback than an SUV — agile, composed, and confidence-inspiring in corners. Steering is light but accurate, and the ride is generally comfortable, even on the Design trim’s 17-inch alloys. It’s well-suited to both urban and rural roads, though wind and engine noise become noticeable at higher speeds.
The cabin design is modern and user-friendly, with VW’s familiar infotainment layout and an 8-inch touchscreen as standard. The Design trim adds coloured dashboard inserts (which can be a matter of taste), two-tone upholstery, and ambient lighting, giving the interior a youthful, customisable vibe.
Practicality is solid for a compact SUV. There’s plenty of headroom and decent space in the rear seats for adults. The boot offers 445 litres, expanding to 1,290 litres with the rear seats folded — more than enough for shopping, luggage, or the odd flat-pack furniture run.
The Design model comes generously equipped with:
Front and rear parking sensors
Adaptive cruise control
Lane assist
Dual-zone climate control
Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
Automatic lights and wipers
For a mid-range spec, the T-Roc Design strikes a nice balance between value and features.
