Description
Presenting our 2009 Renaultsport Megane R26.R in the rare colour combination of Gris Makaha / Nimbus Grey - one of only a handful in the UK.
When launched in 2009, the R26.R moved the goalposts for an already title-contending hot hatch so far over to the extreme end of the spectrum that it started appearing in comparison tests with dedicated, ground-up sports cars from the likes of Lotus and Caterham. Motoring publications tripped over themselves to praise it, mentioning its handling dexterity in the same sentences as the DC2 Integra Type-R… Some journalists even went as far as saying it was superior.
A hardcore diet of 123kg, revised spring rates and dampers, plus super sticky, semi-slick tyres, gave the Megane a lick of speed no hot hatch has any right to possess down a twisting road or around a racetrack. A scorching Nürburgring lap record of just 8:17 underlined the car's pace and ability.
This example has been specified with climate control and stereo, and it has since been fitted with a discreet aftermarket Pioneer infotainment system with satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. The OEM 18-inch alloys are fitted with the factory Toyo R888 tyres, and the sale also includes two spare wheels and tyres making it ideal for the track-day enthusiast.
Mechanically the car is in rude health with a full service history with the latest service carried out by ourselves ready for the new owner. Full details are listed below. Cosmetically, the car carries some mild ‘track patina’ but nothing to warrant concern. Video walkarounds are available on request.

Light modifications enhance performance: Milltek stainless exhaust, short?shift linkage, two?piece front brake discs, and an RS Tuning remap lifting output reliably to around 260?bhp. A dyno printout, MOT certificates and service receipts are all included, as are all three keys.
But what matters about the R26.R is not the numbers, it's the driving. As the harnesses bite down, you immediately feel utterly connected to the machine, as if you’ve become a stressed member of the chassis. This completely re-frames your mindset. Every corner becomes a challenge to clip the precise apex and put fresh air between the inside rear wheel and road surface.
The limited?slip differential is a highlight – subtle in your hands yet fierce at corner exit. Lean hard on the brakes in tight bends and trail?braking becomes second nature. Fast?corner entry is confidence?inspiring, staying neutral and predictable – even on the limit of adhesion.
You can feel every penny invested by Renault in this car: the expense in each and every modification and what it brings to the party. The R26.R is a full sensory experience: plexiglass windows buzzing, exhaust resonating and semi?slicks flinging stones like buckshot. It's a reminder of an analogue era increasingly rare today.
In the end, only 364 of the planned 450 production run were bolted together. Renault UK was bold in reserving 230 of that original allocation but, when the curtain fell, only 159 travelled across the Channel.
With such critical acclaim and rarity, the R26.R is a sure-fire future classic and prices are already climbing. Our subtle Nimbus Grey example is a worthy addition to any collection or to be used as intended.
