Rather than the supercharged S-Type R, which is ruinously expensive to run, this car is the more subtle naturally-aspirated V8. When repatriated it had done 42,000 miles on salt-free Japanese roads so was 'corrosion free'. The sub-frames were subsequently waxed. Japanese imports tend to have covered low miles because it is costly to drive cars regularly in Japan and the extremely rigorous 'Shaken Law' roadworthiness inspection puts people off accruing mileage. Being an import-only Sovereign specification, it features almost every UK option such as extra interior wood, piped leather, electric memory seats, reversing camera, touch screen infotainment system etc and even an electric rear sunblind. The 4.2-litre AJ V8 engine coupled with the smooth ZF six-speed gearbox (with the classic 'J-Gate' manual override) delivers 300bhp providing a significant power response in whatever gear you may be, along with that evocative offbeat roar. It is a truly superb cruiser, and the ride is smooth with that thick-sidewall plushness helped by the smaller 18 inch wheels, and the engine is very long-legged.
Why buy the post-2004 facelift model? In 2002 the chassis received a thorough overhaul with entirely new suspension while the interior was replaced with a much higher quality design. In 2003 the touch screen navigation system, the electronic parking brake and a six speed automatic transmission were introduced. In 2004 the front and rear aprons and rear light clusters were remodelled, an aluminium bonnet added, and the windscreen washer jets incorporated into the windscreen wipers.
