Description
My 1961 Mercedes Ponton was bought from California, hence the LHD and sun-caused patina. I call her Brunhilda, one of the Valkyre (ie from Wagner), because she is the most beautiful woman in the world.
I don't really want to finish doing her up as she now drives so well (I use her 3-4 times every week) and is the ultimate cool machine attracting attention wherever I go and the admiration (yes, really!) of all my friends. But I'm retiring soon and the small size of my pension means we'll have to put up with just one car - my wife's!
She came to the UK in 2018, since when I have been slowly restoring her - mechanical and structural - so it just needs the interior and body renovating now. She lives in a heated garage.
Many new parts:
Windscreen wipers
Stainless steel front pipe and centre section exhaust
Front and rear windscreens
Fitted floor matting (rubber)
Propshaft flexi-disc
Engine mounts
Fuel tank removal and checking, replacing fuel guage sensor gasket and hoses
New carburetor (Weber)
Electronic ignition - 21mpg
Doorlocks
Windscreen washer fluid reservoir
Waterproof, breathable, custom cover
Plus structural:
Welding on front and under wheel arches (photos available)
Extensive underside welding - almost completely new floor in cabin and boot
Roof protection
She comes with a bootfull of old parts, several bits of memorabilia from California and a complete log of what I have done to her since purchase.
I paid a low price for her in 2018, and have spent 3 times that on her since then. Doing up the exterior and interior will cost more, but you may choose to keep her as she is - I did, because I and most people think she is more beautiful like this than when fully restored! She just looks amazingly cool, attracting attention wherever she goes - admiration, conversation, envy and interest!
