Description
Matching numbers California import, rust free survivor in wonderful original condition.
Recently serviced, MOT'd & registered in the UK - new battery, brake system & lights. First registered 18/07/'67 in San Rafael, California, 3 owners, imported to UK in 2017 and dry stored. Complete documentation, service history, COA, service book & owner's manual, leather pouch key fob, California black plates, hubcaps, every receipt since 1973. Such complete documentation is very rare for US imports.
Originally sold to Bruce Benzler of San Rafael, CA on 18/07/'67 by VW dealer Leon C Felton Ltd of San Rafael. Mr Benzler kept the car until Feb '73 when it was purchased by Christy Trip of Carlsbad, CA, who kept the car for the next 41 years. Mr Trip was an antique dealer who appreciated the importance of provenance and this explains why this car has such extensive and detailed documentation. The car's history, including every receipt, invoice, service sheet etc from 1973 to the present day has been collected and bound in 3 presentation folders.
Virtually rust free bodywork. The paint has minor stone chips on the front but is excellent overall & retains a high gloss with no sign of fading or oxidation. Interior is black leatherette in fine condition with some cracking to the top of the dash. Both front seats have new seat foams. The car has the original factory spec - Blaupunkt radio, antenna, coloured windows, & green tint to the top of the windscreen. The carpets are dark-grey felt and the footwells and rear seats have fitted black rubber mats - the original grey carpet panel which fits across both front footwells has been stored and is in as-new condition.
Engine is the numbers matching 1600 flat-4 with a Redline ECU engine management system fitted in 2005, but included is a set of Solex 40 carbs to return it to factory spec. Tansmission is matching numbers 4 speed box.
I also have a 1968 2.0 litre 911 engine with a magnesium case for sale separately which the purchaser will have the opportunity to buy if desired - 911 spec and performance without the cost!
Overall an exceptionally complete and original California survivor in wonderful rust-free condition. An excellent candidate for a light restoration or just keep it as a beautifully patinated 58 year old survivor. As they say, "it's only original once" so don't miss this opportunity to pick up an appreciating classic.
