The Jimny Sierra is proof that not every small SUV has to be a soft, front wheel drive apology. Suzuki looked at the modern world of crossovers and said, "No thanks - we'll keep the ladder frame, live axles and transfer case, if you don't mind."
Underneath the chunky, almost toy-like bodywork is a layout that wouldn't look out of place under an old-school Land Rover: separate chassis, proper low-range 4WD, rigid axles front and rear and a steering box that's more interested in surviving a rock crawl than setting a Nrburgring lap time. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder isn't about fireworks, but in something this small and light it's enough to keep things moving briskly, and on a narrow trail the Jimny's party trick isn't speed anyway - it's the way it picks its way through ruts and over obstacles that would make big, expensive SUVs break out in a cold sweat.
This particular car is the JC grade - the nicely equipped version - and effectively delivery mileage, grade S/A. Finished in a suitably rugged green with black interior, it's basically a brand-new Jimny Sierra that's skipped the dealer forecourt and gone straight to the enthusiast lane. If you've ever wanted a tiny G-Wagen you can actually thread through Japanese backroads or British lanes, this is it.
Smart key / keyless entry
LED headlamps
Leather-wrapped steering wheel
Cruise control
(As a JC, it will also have the usual modern safety kit and air-conditioning, but only items clearly noted or inherent to the model code are listed here.)
Exterior grade S - as-new.
Interior grade A - as-new.
As an enthusiast buy, this sits in a sweet spot. You're getting the full, modern JB74 Jimny Sierra experience - proper ladder frame, low range and retro-boxy looks - without having to worry about previous owners, trail rash or clumsy modifications.
The to-do list is almost entirely up to you:
Decide how serious you want to get off-road: all-terrain tyres, skid plates, maybe a modest lift.
Underneath it all, you've got a virtually new Jimny Sierra JC - a tiny, honest, go-anywhere 4x4 that'll probably still be climbing muddy tracks long after most crossovers have been recycled into fridge doors.
