The 2019 BMW i3 with the 42 kWh (120 Ah) battery and 170 PS (125 kW) motor represents the final major evolution of BMW's pioneering electric car before production ended in 2022.
Launched as a 2019 model this version addressed the biggest criticism of earlier i3s—limited range—by nearly doubling usable capacity compared to the original 22 kWh models and boosting it significantly over the 33 kWh (94 Ah) versions. The standard i3 delivers 170 PS (125 kW) and 250 Nm of instant torque.
The 2019 facelift brought subtle updates like new color options (including Imperial Blue), revised wheel designs (typically 19-inch turbine-style alloys), and adaptive LED headlights on higher trims. Aerodynamic efficiency is excellent (Cd ~0.29), and the car weighs only about 1,320-1,350 kg thanks to the lightweight carbo fibre construction—key to its agile drivability.
Step inside and the i3 feels premium and airy. The i3 is one of the most engaging small EVs ever made. Rear-wheel drive, near-50:50 weight distribution, quick steering (variable ratio), and low center of gravity deliver go-kart-like handling.
The 2019 BMW i3 42 kWh / 170 PS is a brilliant, characterful EV that's aged surprisingly well.
If you appreciate quirky design and engaging handling it's still one of the most rewarding small EVs you can buy today and excellent value.
