The BYD Dolphin Surf Active is the entry-level version of BYD’s compact electric hatchback, but it still places a strong emphasis on technology and everyday usability rather than feeling stripped back. Despite its lower price point, the Active model retains many of the core digital features and EV technologies that define the Dolphin Surf range, making it one of the more tech-rich options in the budget EV segment. At the centre of the interior is BYD’s 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, which is a standout feature at this level. The screen can switch between portrait and landscape orientation and acts as the main control hub for navigation, media, climate settings and vehicle functions. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Bluetooth connectivity and integrated voice control, allowing drivers to operate key systems with minimal distraction. The digital experience is supported by a driver display that presents essential information such as speed, battery level and range in a clear, modern format. The overall cabin design follows a minimalist, tech-led layout with limited physical buttons, reinforcing the focus on screen-based interaction and connectivity. A major part of the car’s technology lies in its battery system. The Active model uses a 30 kWh version of BYD’s Blade Battery, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This technology is designed to improve safety, thermal stability and longevity, allowing more frequent charging with less long-term degradation compared with conventional battery types. The system delivers a real-world range of just over 100 miles, with a WLTP figure of around 137 miles, making it primarily suited to urban and short-distance use. Charging technology remains competitive for the class, with support for AC home charging up to 11 kW and DC rapid charging, enabling relatively quick top-ups when needed. In terms of features, the Active trim includes a surprisingly high level of standard equipment. This includes a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and a suite of driver aids.
