Car floorpan quite rusty at this point. Car taken out of use with the aim of rebuilding it on to a replacement bodyshell. It had been kept in a damp garage when not in use and despite the salty roads in rural Exmoor in winter it never had a hose put under it. However the paintwork and inside had always been kept immaculate!
A replacement rust free 'rolling bodyshell' was obtained, i.e. no engine etc, but on its wheels, with its origins shown as California. There is a receipt showing this. More than this is not known of its origins.
This bodyshell was stripped of components and there are photos of it on its side in a jig with the bottom obviously being rustproofed. There are receipts for the materials. It has also been resprayed the original car's white.
Subsequently the mechanical components have been rebuilt onto this replacement bodyshell. Significant mechanical renovation has been done along the way with various new parts. The cylinder head has had new exhaust valve seats fitted with new valves and springs so that it can be safely run on unleaded fuel. The owner was a perfectionist. Nothing less was acceptable.
The tyres appear to be new.
Mechanically the car appears to be complete. I have worked on cars myself since the 1960s, so I understand what I'm looking at.
What remains to be done?
Everything appears to be there. The front bumper needs to be fitted. The dashboard needs to go back in. The passenger seat needs installing. There is clearly electrics to be reinstated.
Bodypanels which have all been resprayed: The front wings and the bonnet need to go on. Also the doors - there is a receipt for a "rust free passenger side door" - photos I have of the car in 1997/8 clearly show the original to be rusty.
The soft top and tonneau cover look to be in good condition. It was never left out in the weather from new.
There are photographs of all the body panels etc.
The car is located in rural Devon a couple of miles from Cullompton.
