Description

This highly original 1984 Vauxhall Astra GTE Mk1 has been part of our late father-in-law's cherished collection for many years, and following his passing, it has now come into our care. He was immensely proud of the car and preserved it with obvious affection, maintaining its originality and ensuring it remained a wonderful example of one of Britain's most iconic 1980s hot hatches. Finished in Carmine Red over the distinctive 'Chicago' velour-trimmed interior with standard Recaro recliner seating, the car presents in very good condition throughout and remains remarkably original, aside from the sensible addition of a modern Bluetooth-compatible JVC stereo. It retains its original alloy wheels with centre caps, period 'Cibie Oscar' driving lamps, rare sliding metal sunroof, and even the original under-bonnet toolkit. Powered by the naturally aspirated, fuel-injected 1.8-litre inline-four engine driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, the Astra still delivers the engaging and lively driving experience that made the GTE such a respected rival to the Golf GTI during the 1980s. Our father-in-law ensured the car was carefully maintained during his ownership. In recent years it has benefited from a replacement battery and a major service carried out in July 2020 at 71,457 miles, including replacement of the cam belt, water pump, gearbox oil, brake fluid, and gear linkage bush. The service history file is extensive and includes the original owner's book pack, service book, sales brochure, Haynes workshop manual, handwritten notes from a previous owner, and numerous receipts documenting maintenance over the years. The original service record remains with the car, showing delivery inspection in August 1984 and regular servicing through to 1994. MOT records confirm consistent testing history since the DVLA online system began in 2006, with the most recent MOT conducted on 1 May 2025 at 72,126 miles. The vehicle is now MOT exempt. It is believed the Blackburn-issued registration number, B999 MDG, may well be original to the vehicle, further adding to its authenticity and provenance. While already a very well-preserved and usable example, it would likely require only minimal further detailing to achieve concours-level presentation. With so few surviving Mk1 Astra GTEs remaining on UK roads today.
