The 986 Boxster is one of Porsche's sweetest cars, but some examples are starting to show their age. This 1999MY car is not one of them. Zenith Blue metallic with a navy roof and grey leather is a particularly handsome early 986 combination, further sharpened by smoked facelift lights and 18-inch Porsche Turbo Twist alloys. Early cars used a dual-row IMS bearing with a failure rate of less than one per cent – significantly lower than the single-row unit fitted from 2000 onwards. Thicker cylinder walls also mean bore scoring isn't a concern either. Some may argue the 3.2 S is the one to have, but in a car weighing just 1,250kg, and with that flat-six soundtrack just over your shoulder, 201bhp never feels anything less than adequate. The six-speed gearbox is a pleasure to use, and the mid-engine balance gives the 986 a purity of feedback that larger, faster cars often struggle to match.
