Description
I had intended preparing this one for track racing in the 5club series which exclusively uses the early NA with 1.6 engine. I began with a basically sound car and fixed all of it's many bodywork issues...IN METAL...and prepared the high mileage but very reliable engine for future use.
Once all the nasty bodywork was sorted I decided to respray all of the rusty bits in a bright colour as a track safety feature!
It's not bad but not perfect.
Unfortunately bad health has slowed down my racing ambition.
It would take very little to complete this car to perfection for the track or road. 5club track racing does not allow for any major changes to the car other than the addition of a 6 point cage, tyres and suspension. For the road you may want to erase the "track colours" and invest in a professional paint finish.
The interior is good in terms of plastic facia and carpets. The door cards are ok with very small tears at the bottom on the drivers side. I fitted almost unused tombstone seats from a wrecked NB and ripped out the aged radio for an extra cubby. I use a bluetooth speaker for entertainment (not included).
My price reflects the higher mileage. However, the overall condition of the car is pretty good and you will struggle to find an NA in this condition at this price.
Condition assessment:
In very good condition. All of the typical MX5 horror show metal has been replaced with metal! The paintwork is reasonably good. A professional paint job would finish this as a fantastic road car. I choose the '66 Lotus colours because I had yellow paint available! The bodywork was basically pink (sun faded red) with rusted sills. I painted bonnet and boot with 2k red and it's pretty good but but not perfect. The high mileage engine (original) is still a very strong 1.6 unit and benefits from a full cooling system replacement/overhaul. It does not burn/use oil and compression is good. The gearbox is slick and responsive with a recent clutch replacement and new master and slave cylinders. Running gear is good with recent new tyres, brake pads and rear wheel hubs (with bearings).A new battery was fitted at the time of MOT. It benefits from a hard top for winter use and the soft top has a new rear screen. Both in reasonable condition and completely leak free. This early MX5 na is a tidyand rust free example.
