Description
Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda has been in the family since my late father-in-law bought it in 2016, and it has now come to us following his passing. We are not car enthusiasts or collectors ourselves, so we're selling it simply because it deserves to go to someone who will appreciate and enjoy it properly.
The car is a lovely classic 1960s convertible with the removable hard top roof that these "Pagoda" models are well known for. It is left-hand drive and was originally registered in Italy before later going to the US and eventually coming to the UK. It was first registered with the DVLA in June 2013.
From the paperwork and information we have, the car is fitted with a replacement 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine from a later W113 280 SL, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The odometer currently shows 10,580 kilometres, though we understand the total mileage is approximately 110,580 kilometres.
It is finished in Tunis Beige metallic with a black interior, beige carpets, and matching dashboard trim. The car sits on 14-inch steel wheels with chrome and black centres and whitewall tyres, which really suit the look of the car.
Included with the sale are the removable black hard top and storage stand, import paperwork, photographs, invoices and service history, the V5C, and a spare wheel.
As far as we know, the car has been well cared for over the years, particularly during my father-in-law's ownership. We have a large file of invoices, including many from its time in the US. The most recent work we can see from the paperwork was carried out in February 2025 by a Mercedes specialist and included replacement of the battery, front brake pads, spark plugs, gear shift bushings, seals, and an oil service. Earlier invoices during his ownership mention work to suspension components, mounts, seals, seatbelts, and detailing of the engine bay.
The front seats were refurbished during his ownership. The car also has a wind deflector, aftermarket air conditioning and inertia seatbelts. We understand the original Becker radio is currently not working, and the clock works intermittently.
The last MOT was completed on 18 March 2026 at 10,575 km and passed first time with no advisories.
As you would expect for a 62-year-old car, there are some age-related marks and imperfections. These include a few paint chips, a small ding on the hard top, and some wear to the interior trim of the hard top. We have tried to describe the car as honestly as possible, but we are not experts
