Description

1967 MK3 Roundtail Spitfire. I purchased this in 2020 with the idea of converting it to electric then simply changed my mind due to its heritage. The car has a pile of paperwork with it that documents the mileage. It had done 45K by the early 80's and was then taken off the road and at some point has been fitted with, what I think is, a Herald Overdrive Gearbox. It comes with a frame for Soft top but was originally purchased with just a Hardtop. The Good Bits: The car was rustproofed (Waxoyl) very early on in it's life, see the photos of the boot. This has kept it primarily rust free and is an excellent example for it's age. When I bought it the carbs were worn out and the engine running extremely rich plus the radiator had been severely damaged by an aftermarket disc brake master cylinder so I set about slowly replacing or refurbishing parts to put it back to as close to original as possible. So far I've... ...Refurbished original Radiator / Overflow Bottle ...Refurbished Original Carbs by SU Specialist ...Installed New Carpets ...Installed New Gearbox Tunnel ...Installed New Fuel Pump ...Installed Electronic Ignition ...Installed New Clutch Plate & actuator arm There's still a way to go but my plan was to get it roadworthy and mot'd again but I have so many projects on the go I'm struggling for time. The Bad Bits: It has a very small oil leak, but don't they all, less than a teaspoon over 6 years. The car was not smoking at all before I started my mini resto so, whilst I purchased a gasket set, I didn't install it. The brakes need recommissioning. If I were the new owner I'd be replacing the bushes as some are showing signs of wear, Possibly refurbish rear springs, but it sits nicely with no sagging, so that's your call. The wheels have been painted at some point but are looking tired and the rubber is definitely passed it's best before date. At some point too, probably by the previous owner, it's had a respray, including the Hard Top. It's a very good one, but a respray all the same. I've found a couple of minor patches of rust that had broken through that needed attention but nothing major and no new bubbles in the last 6 years! The wing has suffered accident damage on the nearside front. It's not too visible and nothing that a good panel beater couldn't handle but it's there. So all in, an easy fixer upper. I estimate that it could be running and on the road very quickly. Or, an excellent starting point for a full restoration. It's your call.
