The sensor monitors oxygen levels in the exhaust gases and sends this information to the ECU, which uses it to regulate the air-to-fuel mixture. The faulty sensor can occasionally provide an incorrect reading, causing the ECU to adjust the fuelling incorrectly, resulting in a slight stutter/hesitation at low revs. Replacing the O2 sensor should rectify the fault.
