Selling my trusty 1999 Starlet. If you know these cars, you'll know they are absolutely bulletproof and just refuse to die. It has only covered 75,303 genuine miles and has been incredibly reliable for me. To save us both some time, here is the complete, honest picture of the car. The Reality (The Honest Bits): She's a bit of a guzzler: It's a 1.3L petrol engine with a 90s automatic gearbox, so if you're expecting modern hybrid fuel economy, this isn't it! It likes a drink compared to newer cars, but what you lose at the petrol pump, you easily save by never having to pay for breakdown cover. It has some rust: Like almost every Japanese car from this era, rust is starting to show. The main spot is bubbling on the passenger-side rear wheel arch (pictured), and there's a bit of surface rust on the front passenger wing scrape. Battle scars: There's a dent on the left side of the boot lid (boot still opens, closes, and locks perfectly) and a scrape on the front passenger wing. Also, there are no hubcapsjust riding on the classic black steel wheels. Why it's still a brilliant little car: Unbelievably reliable: It has never let me down. It actually came with a massive battery fitted to it, which means it absolutely fires up on the button instantly, even on freezing winter mornings. Good rubber: I fitted four brand-new Kumho tyres a while back. They still have loads of tread left on them and are a proper, safe brandnot cheap plastic ditch-finders. Tidy retro interior: The blue patterned seats and door cards are in surprisingly clean condition. No nasty tears or major wear. Low mileage: Just over 75k miles is nothing for these engines. If you want a pristine show car, this isn't the one. But if you want a cheap, solid, automatic runaround that starts first time, every time, you won't find a more dependable engine for under a grand.
