1970 Volvo Amazon 133 - B20B, M41 Overdrive - Rare Final-Year Survivor
Thank you for taking the time to look at my Volvo Amazon.
This is a car I genuinely love, and I'll be heartbroken to see it go. I've invested a great deal of time, effort and money getting it driving properly, but I've come to the conclusion that it's time for someone with the facilities and time to take it to the next level. It remains a rolling restoration with enormous potential.
Mechanically, the car is in the best condition it's been in for years. It starts easily, runs beautifully and is a joy to drive. Although cosmetically it's delightfully honest and "crusty" in places, underneath it's a fundamentally solid, reliable car that inspires confidence on long journeys. Thanks to its recently refurbished J-type overdrive, it cruises comfortably at modern motorway speeds while still being tremendous fun on Scotland's twisty B-roads.
This is one of the final-year Volvo Amazon 133 models, fitted with the legendary B20B engine, twin SU HS6 carburettors and the desirable M41 four-speed gearbox with J-type overdrive. It's a rare and increasingly sought-after specification.
Recent mechanical work includes:
- New GT wheels and tyres
- Refurbished J-type overdrive
- Refurbished cylinder head with unleaded conversion
- New water pump
- New radiator
- New alternator
- Twin SU HS6 carburettors serviced and set up with new non-rattle throttle linkage
- New front and rear brakes
- New front wheel bearings
- New carpet set
- Seats restrung with new foam cushion
The engine pulls strongly, the gearbox is excellent, the overdrive works exactly as it should and the car is genuinely enjoyable to drive.
The honest bits...
I'd rather be completely transparent than oversell the car.
It does require welding to the windscreen surround, sections of the front and rear floor pans, and the jacking points. There is also a small repair required to one rear corner of the boot floor, along with bubbling paint around the rear wheel arches. None of this should come as a surprise on a 56-year-old Amazon, and I've tried to price the car accordingly.
Despite this, it's a dependable classic that can be driven and enjoyed while improvements are made over time.
Wherever it goes, people stop to look, smile, wave or start conversations. It has a charm that modern classics simply can't replicate. Best of all, it rewards enthusiastic drivingit's beautifully balanced, full of character
