The Niro is a really sensible all-rounder if you want the space and higher driving position of an SUV without moving into something particularly large or expensive to run. The '4' is the one to have as well, adding a genuinely impressive amount of comfort and technology rather than just cosmetic upgrades. The hybrid system is nice and straightforward. A 1.6-litre petrol engine works alongside an electric motor, with the car automatically deciding when to use electric assistance and when the petrol engine is required. The small hybrid battery replenishes itself as you drive, including through energy recovered when slowing down, so there is nothing to plug in. Around town it can make use of electric assistance more regularly, while the petrol engine is there when you need more performance or you're travelling further. It's all paired with a 6-speed DCT automatic gearbox, so from the driver's seat you simply get in and drive. Being the Niro '4', the specification is one of the strongest parts of this car. Up front you've got heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, while the outer rear seats are heated too.
