The B-MAX is one of the cleverest small cars Ford ever built, and nothing else on the road does what it does. There is no central B-pillar. The front doors open conventionally, the rear doors slide back on rails, and with both open on the same side you get a completely unobstructed 1.5-metre opening from the front seat to the rear. That sounds like a detail until you use it. Fitting a child seat becomes genuinely easy rather than a contortion. Lifting a toddler in and out, helping an elderly passenger, or loading something long and awkward all become simple. And because the rear doors slide rather than swing, you can get in and out in a tight supermarket bay or a narrow garage without banging the car next to you. Ford stopped building the B-MAX in 2017, so this is a final-year car, and there has never been a direct replacement from any manufacturer. Zetec Navigator specification adds satellite navigation to an already sensible list: alloy wheels, air conditioning, DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, Ford's Quickclear heated front windscreen - a genuine luxury on frosty mornings - front fog lights, electric front windows and heated door mirrors. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol produces 100ps with 170Nm, and it is a remarkable little engine - three cylinders, plenty of low-down pull for town driving, and close to 57mpg on a run with CO2 of just 114g/km. Being petrol it avoids the particulate filter and emissions-zone complications of an older diesel, and it is Euro 6 so fully ULEZ and clean air zone compliant. Practicality goes beyond the doors. The rear seats fold and tumble, the front passenger seat folds flat, and the boot extends from 318 litres to 1,386 litres. Visibility is excellent thanks to the tall glass and high seating position.
