Description
One registered keeper. Exceptionally low mileage. Strong maintenance history. What more could you ask for? "Sought-after limited edition," did I hear? How does 1 of 85 sound? If ever there was a sure-fire four-wheeled investment, this may well be it.
Initially offered in November 1998, the limited run of 50 cars sold out within a single day. In response to the overwhelming demand, Lotus offered a second batch of just 35 cars in the new year, visually distinguished by a black fuel-filler cap and six-spoke OZ Racing wheels shared with the 111S. The car's chassis number places it as the fourth of the 35 built.
Universally praised by the motoring press and finishing second in EVO Car of the Year 1998, Lotus took an already brilliant car and further raised the bar with the Sport 135. Widely considered the sweet-spot in the S1 range, the stated 135 bhp power output is viewed as a conservative estimate which, when combined with a close-ratio gearbox, uprated suspension, and improved braking, makes for something truly iconic.
Beautifully finished in an exclusive shade dubbed Quicksilver, the car presents to an exceptional standard. Whilst the keen-eyed will spot the odd imperfection, it is fair to say that for a largely original and unrestored 27-year-old car it really is quite remarkable. Of particular note is the near-absence of stone chips which, even with such modest mileage, evidences consistently careful use. The six-spoke alloy wheels - each clad in Pirelli rubber - display free from kerb damage and with minimal flaws. The dark blue hood is wonderfully preserved and is interchangeable with the accompanying body-coloured hard top.
Taking pride of place in the cabin are a pair of freshly retrimmed Corbeau bucket seats complemented by a matching Alcantara trimmed steering wheel. The dashboard, door cards, sill covers and exposed aluminium all present in excellent order commensurate with the vehicle's low mileage and sympathetic use.
Maintenance records document 11 services with a cam belt change carried out in preparation for sale.
