Description

The Definitive Specification Galway Green over Sand and Jet Black hides with Extended Burr Walnut trim: the facelifted L322 Autobiography in its most complete form. It is difficult to sit at home on a Sunday evening, watching Jeremy Clarkson wallow across a waterlogged Cotswold field in his green L322, and conclude that you don't want one. He has long maintained that it is the best car in the world, and few who have driven one would argue. His is the 3.6 diesel, from the mid-life update - What we have here is something else: the car in its ultimate form. The 5.0-litre supercharged V8 sat at the very summit of the facelifted range. It produces 503bhp, and the supercharger delivers its torque almost from the moment the throttle is touched, so that a car of such upright, stately bearing gathers itself and simply goes, with a turn of speed that still catches people out. It is a magnificent engine, and one JLR thought highly enough of to use across the best of its range, from Jaguar's R and SVR models to the fastest Range Rovers of the following decade. It has since been retired, another of the genuinely special things quietly taken from us, which makes a well-kept example all the more worth having. Most British buyers took the diesel; of those who didn't, most chose darker paint and privacy glass. A 5.0 Autobiography in Galway Green over Sand, left on clear glass, is a very different proposition, and in all our years with these cars we have come across only a handful. The L322 itself needs little defending. In facelifted form it represents the final evolution of the breed, built before layer upon layer of electronics began to dilute what a Range Rover ought to be. More than fifteen years on, it remains remarkably well equipped without ever asking its driver to wade through menus or wait on laggy software. It is a car that simply works, and there are fewer of those about than there used to be. At 85,000 miles, this is a Range Rover that has been used as its makers intended, and it is all the better for it. Many buyers go looking for the lowest mileage they can find, but years of inspecting these cars for ourselves and for clients have taught us otherwise. Cars left standing suffer quietly: seals harden, fluids settle, and the bill for bringing a barely used example back to life can be considerable. A regularly driven, properly maintained L322 is the far better companion.
